49ers drop Grizzlies 74-56 in BracketBusters
Eugene Phelps scored 19 points and Larry Anderson added 17 to lead Long Beach State to a 74-56 win over Montana in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Pyramid.
The 49ers of the Big West Conference improved to 17-10 with the win in a BracketBusters matchup. Montana, ranked No. 16 in the mid-major poll, fell to 19-8 overall and will return to Big Sky Conference action on Thursday at Portland State.
Phelps, 6-foot-6, and Anderson, 6-5, got most of their work done on the inside, where Montana figured to have an advantage with 6-11 Brian Qvale and 7-foot Derek Selvig. But Montana’s big men found themselves on the bench eight minutes into the game with two fouls apiece.
The 49ers took advantage to take a 36-24 lead at intermission.
With Selvig and Qvale back on the floor, the Griz cut the gap to 44-37 early in the second half on consecutive layups by Qvale and a put-back by Art Steward.
The Griz missed a chance to cut more off the deficit when Qvale could convert just 1 of 4 free throws.
The 49ers took advantage with an 8-1 burst to push the lead back into double digits at 52-38. Greg Plater, who the Griz recruited, and Anderson had 3-pointers in the burst.
Montana got the deficit back into single digits on a pair of free throws and a put-back by Qvale to draw within 54-46 with 7:18 to play.
But an 8-0 run by the 49ers stretched the lead to 62-46 and essentially sealed the outcome.
Point guard Casper Ware added 12 points for the 49ers and Robinson had 10.
Qvale led the Griz with 17 points and Steward added 13. Selvig, though, was held scoreless for the first time this season as the Griz shot just 38 percent from the floor.
The 49ers bolted to a 15-4 lead behind six points from Ware.
Selvig picked up his second foul moments later and Qvale followed him to the bench with 12:16 to play in the first half. Neither returned before intermission.
The Griz pulled within 21-17 on a four-point play by Steward with 9:40 to play before the break. But the 49ers used a 9-1 run capped by a 3-pointer by Anderson to stretch the lead out to 30-18.
Anderson and Ware had eight points apiece in the first half for the 49ers, who shot 50 percent from the floor.
Steward had eight first-half points for the Griz, who shot just 30 percent before the break.
