Bears Clinch: Men's Tourney Field Set
Northern Colorado captured its first Big Sky Conference men's basketball championship Wednesday night, securing the right to host the championship semifinals and championship next week.
Paced by 32 points from senior guard Devon Beitzel, the Bears took care of Sacramento State 84-44 in front of a sold-out crowd at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. The Bears finished conference play 13-3 under first-year coach B.J. Hill.
Butler-Hancock will play host the 2011 Big Sky Men's Basketball Championship semifinals and championship. The semifinals will be played Tuesday, starting at 5:30 p.m. Mountain. The second semifinal, featuring Northern Colorado, will begin at 8 p.m. Mountain.
Montana earned the No. 2 seed and a bye to the semifinals thanks to Eastern Washington's upset of Weber State on Wednesday night in Ogden. EWU raced out to a 40-22 halftime lead and beat the Wildcats 75-59, ending Weber State's streak of 221 straight regular-season home conference wins.
The two teams will meet once again on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. Mountain at the Dee Events Center. Weber State is the No. 3 seed. Eastern Washington is the sixth seed. The Eagles are in the tournament for the first time since 2006.
Northern Arizona closed out the regular season with a 79-52 win over Portland State. Senior Eric Platt scored 21 points. The Lumberjacks are the fourth-seeded team in the championship. NAU will play host to fifth-seeded Montana State in a quarterfinal game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. That game will be televised on NAU-TV and Fox College Sports Pacific.
Montana State ended the regular season with an 84-68 win over Idaho State. Senior Dany Piepoli (22), Eric Rush (20) and Bobby Howard (20) combined for 62 points in the win.
